This Is Not Hansel and Gretel is a free solo theatre show by Christian Hege, directed by Jenny Mercein, running for 60 minutes at Chamber Room. Set in the fourteenth century, the show retells the story of two children abandoned in the woods — and a witch — but focuses on the telling itself. It is described as a fairy tale for grown-ups from one of the darkest times in Europe: years of failed crops, mass starvation and two real children genuinely afraid they would be eaten. Hege returns to the Fringe following a three-week run in New York of a previous show. Content warnings apply for distressing themes and scenes of violence. Suitable for ages 18 and over.
Why see this show?
A one-man fairy tale for grown-ups set in a time of genuine terror — failed harvests, mass starvation and two children afraid of being eaten. Christian Hege's storytelling strips the familiar tale back to its darkest, most human origins.
