What do we know about trust? Do we even need to trust anymore, when we can just look people up online or track their movements? Dr Michael Stirrat (Edinburgh Napier University) explores trust and relationships. In 1746, a priest electrocuted 200 monks to measure the speed of electricity. According to the monks the answer was 'Aaaaah!' Physicist Dr Nick Werren (Heriot-Watt University) traces electricity's shocking history through sordid science, countless dead frogs and the Corpse Matinée.

About The Provocateurs

The Provocateurs: Should You Trust Anyone? / 200 Monks, 1 Dead Frog is a spoken word double bill at Stand 2 during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The first piece sees Dr Michael Stirrat from Edinburgh Napier University explore trust and relationships in an age when we can simply look people up online or track their movements. The second piece has physicist Dr Nick Werren of Heriot-Watt University tracing electricity's shocking history — including the story of a priest who electrocuted 200 monks to measure the speed of electricity — through sordid science, dead frogs and the Corpse Matinée. The show runs for 60 minutes and is suitable for ages 14 and over.

Why see this show?

Two academics, two brilliantly odd subjects — trust in the digital age and the violent early history of electricity. An hour of genuinely surprising spoken word at Stand 2 that treats the audience as curious adults.
