The Provocateurs presents two thought-provoking talks in one session. First, Beth Meadows from Glasgow Caledonian University examines why society relies on alcohol as a social lubricant, why certain communities — including LGBTQIA+ groups — face greater risks from alcohol-related harms, and what alcohol-free nightlife culture could mean for public health. Then Dr Dan Ridley-Ellis, wood scientist at Edinburgh Napier University, asks audiences what they think the purpose of trees actually is, and how we should decide which kinds to plant so that future generations won't be annoyed by our decisions.
