Is it me, you or everybody else? Communication underpins everything we do and yet so often we misunderstand one another. Dr Bryony Buck (Edinburgh Napier University and University of Dundee) explores how divergent brains and bodies can make even simple communication difficult, and possible ways to address this. Horror films can be cathartic, validating and meaningful. Can they be more helpful than counselling or therapy for dealing with anxiety, depression, grief or trauma? Trauma therapist Dr Amy Beddows (Edinburgh Napier University) and hardcore horror fan thinks so.

About The Provocateurs

The Provocateurs present a double-bill of spoken word talks at Stand 2. In the first, Dr Bryony Buck from Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Dundee explores how divergent brains and bodies can make even simple communication difficult, and considers possible ways to address this. In the second, trauma therapist Dr Amy Beddows — also of Edinburgh Napier University and a hardcore horror fan — makes the case that horror films can be cathartic, validating and meaningful, and asks whether they can be more helpful than counselling for dealing with anxiety, depression, grief or trauma.

Why see this show?

Two genuinely curious academics bring real expertise to questions that most people have never thought to ask. Whether communication baffles you or you secretly find horror films more therapeutic than talking, there is something here to challenge your assumptions.
