Using the body as my medium, I explore life and identity. I try to find my own place within the crowd and let go of unnecessary labels. I want to break down a disciplined body and cross its boundaries to discover a comfortable, natural way of dancing. We twist and tighten ourselves, hoping to become completely clear. We may spiral upwards in growth, but we can also spiral downwards, without knowing where life will take us. Every exploration helps me untie my inner knots. I long for a bright future, but I also fear the hardships there might be.

About Xiaowei Ren

Spiral is a solo dance and physical theatre piece by Xiaowei Ren, a student and youth company artist. Using the body as medium, the work explores life and identity — finding one's place within the crowd, shedding unnecessary labels, and breaking down a disciplined body to discover a more natural, comfortable way of moving. The piece reflects on the dual nature of spiralling: growing upward and also descending, without knowing where life leads. The performance takes place in the Grand Theatre and runs for 40 minutes, with an age guidance of 16 and over.

Why see this show?

An introspective solo dance that uses physical movement to untangle questions of identity and belonging. Ren's honest, searching choreography — neither decorative nor abstract — makes this a quietly compelling short work.
