About the show
Painting the Roses Red is an absurdist theatre piece by Kalopsia Theatre exploring immigration, patriotism and what it means to belong. Drawing inspiration from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and the reality of a recent rise in overt nationalism, the show uses Carroll's own words — 'the time has come to talk of many things: of shoes and ships, and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings' — as its touchstone. Running 60 minutes at Willow Studio, the show includes audience participation and is suitable for ages 8+.
Why see this show?
Using Wonderland's absurdist logic to interrogate nationalism is a sharp creative choice — familiar enough to be accessible, strange enough to keep you off-balance. A timely piece for audiences willing to engage with ideas through play.
