London, 1918. When wartime hysteria pillories Oscar Wilde's Salomé for corrupting the nation with homosexuality, Robert Ross – the late author’s literary executor, devoted friend, and "first boy" (or so he believes) – is once again made to defend the legacy he sacrificed his life to protect. As courtroom circus shatters the memories he has spent decades curating, the line between devotion and delusion begins to blur. This is a story about saints who are canonised by love and fools who sacrificed themselves for it. Oxford New Writing Festival runner-up: Best Play.

About the show

Set in London in 1918, this new play from Carfax Productions follows Robert Ross, literary executor and devoted friend to Oscar Wilde, as he is once again forced to defend Wilde's Salomé against accusations of corrupting the nation. As a courtroom spectacle tears apart the memories he has spent decades preserving, the boundary between devotion and delusion begins to dissolve. A story of saints canonised by love and fools who sacrificed themselves for it, this is historical new writing for audiences aged 16 and over.

Why see this show?

A tightly wound courtroom drama that peels back the myth of devoted friendship, asking where loyalty ends and self-destruction begins. Carfax Productions bring genuine emotional complexity to a compelling piece of historical new writing.
