The Story of the Stone is a contemporary Kunqu opera adaptation of the Chinese classic Dream of the Red Chamber, presented by the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre with WanQuanZhunBei from China. Jia Baoyu, once a sentient stone, is reborn and guided by Buddhist and Daoist forces towards a transcendence of emptiness. Wang Pushi, a fourth-generation actor of the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, mirrors this awakening through his performance. The work fuses classic Kunqu with modern experimental theatre, immersive media and slow rock music. Performed in Mandarin and English with English surtitles, it runs for 60 minutes and is suitable from age 8. Tickets are £14.
