About Michael Hughes
The Last Bantam tells the story of Patrick Michael Wolfe, a teacher from Dublin, who served in a Bantam battalion during the Great War. Set in Bouzincourt, France in 1918, the play begins when a group of reporters visit the front to write about the Bantams — soldiers recruited across Britain, Ireland and Canada for their small stature. Known after the small, aggressive rooster, these men were formed into special Bantam battalions. Inspired by real events, Michael Hughes's drama traces Wolfe's journey from the battlefields of France to rebellion in Dublin.
