The Landscape of the Other Shore is a contemporary physical theatre piece by Shenzhen University School of Arts, performed in Mandarin. Inspired by Géricault's painting and Georg Kaiser's play The Raft of the Medusa, it tells of twelve children adrift at sea who become murderers over seven days. Unfolding through image-based vignettes — a chimpanzee with painted nails, an ignored petition, a missing doll — it asks who the figures on the raft really are. A meditation on alienation and the self, suited to audiences aged 12 and over.
Why see this show?
Performed in Mandarin and rooted in both visual art and dramatic literature, this is physical theatre that unsettles rather than explains. Its image-based storytelling lingers — an ignored petition, a missing doll — and asks uncomfortable questions about who we become when adrift.
