About the show
Personal Statement is a new writing dark comedy from Westlake Theatre, a student and youth company, presented at Auditorium, Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Twenty-three American students enter a brutal college application workshop, where they must get their personal statement topics approved by a mysterious, unseen instructor in order to leave. As they pitch stories — some absurd, some manipulative, some deeply personal — they confront the expectations, fears and ambitions shaping their lives. Poignant and darkly funny, running 70 minutes, suitable for ages 12 and over.
Why see this show?
A clever theatrical premise that turns the college application process into a pressure cooker. The unseen instructor is a brilliant device, and the diverse cast of twenty-three students gives the show real range and texture.
