A dance-theatre piece that explores Mary Magdalene's misused and conflated identity. The sum of vague references in the Bible, as well as a blatant decision to confound all other Marys mentioned, resulted in multiple versions of Mary of Magdala’s story: none of them true. Maria explores the iconic symbol and vital half of the ever-relevant Madonna/Wh*re trope that has defined and dictated femininity. Sex worker, devoted wife, holy disciple or completely out of her mind?

About Neféli

Maria – a Play by Nefeli is a dance-theatre solo show performed at Olive Studio over 50 minutes. Created and performed by Nefeli, the piece examines the misused and conflated identity of Mary Magdalene — exploring how vague Biblical references and a deliberate conflation of multiple women named Mary produced a figure defined more by myth than fact. The show interrogates the Madonna/Wh*re trope that has long shaped ideas of femininity, asking whether she was sex worker, devoted wife, holy disciple or something else entirely. Suitable for ages 16 and over.

Why see this show?

A physically driven solo show that digs beneath centuries of received narrative to ask who Mary Magdalene actually was. Nefeli uses movement and theatre to challenge an enduring cultural archetype in a way that is thought-provoking and immediate.
