About Pip Utton
King Lear is a one-man show written and performed by Pip Utton, staged at Baby Grand as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Drawing mainly from William Shakespeare, Utton's Lear is mad — mad at the weather, mad at his daughters, mad at everyone and everything — and genuinely unhinged into the bargain. The story of a king who divides his kingdom between three daughters based on declarations of love, only to see everything go horribly wrong, is told with comic fury and dramatic intensity. The show runs 60 minutes, tickets are £12, and is suitable for ages 14 and above.
Why see this show?
A solo take on Shakespeare's most relentlessly angry king, delivered with the full force of one performer carrying an entire tragic world. At 60 minutes it is tightly concentrated, and at £12 a reasonable way to encounter Lear if you have not seen the play.
