I Was a German is a professional storytelling and historical theatre piece by Clare Fraenkel and Suzanna Rosenthal Productions. In 1933 Berlin, Clare's grandfather Heinz went out to the cinema and never came home. Decades later, Clare claims the German citizenship he gave up, shining a light on his extraordinary true story — from the cabaret scene of nineteen-thirties Berlin to becoming an 'enemy alien' in nineteen-forties Britain, arrested by everyone from the Soviets to Winston Churchill. A vivid account of one Jewish refugee finding his way home, and his granddaughter searching for her roots. Running 60 minutes at the Studio, Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
