Cassandra

Ailsa DixonProfessional company

What does it mean to be believed? Traditional storyteller and musician Ailsa Dixon blends Greek myth, Scottish folklore and personal narrative into an exploration of prophecy, protest and survival. Cassandra sits in Apollo’s temple, mind shattering under the weight of predictions never believed. A spaewife is thrust under the waves of a loch. An island witch is put to the pyre. Their voices ring in the ears of their murderers. In an Edinburgh tenement, a girl daubs slogans on cardboard placards, ignoring the prophecies whistling on the winds of Auld Reekie. Stories are stirring. The north wind rises.

About Ailsa Dixon

Cassandra is a storytelling and theatre piece by Ailsa Dixon, a traditional storyteller and musician, performed at the George Mackay Brown Library. The work weaves together Greek myth, Scottish folklore, and personal narrative into an exploration of prophecy, protest, and survival. From Cassandra in Apollo's temple to a spaewife drowned in a loch and an island witch sent to the pyre, to a girl in an Edinburgh tenement daubing slogans on cardboard placards — Dixon traces a thread of women whose voices were silenced, and asks what it means to be believed.

Why see this show?

A quietly powerful piece that connects ancient myth to Scottish history and the present day — Dixon's traditional storytelling craft makes it feel both timeless and urgent, ideal for audiences who like theatre that carries real weight.
