Alice Hawkins – Working Class Suffragette is a spoken word show in which Peter Barratt, great-grandson of suffragette Alice Hawkins, presents an account of her campaign for the right to vote, passed down through family oral history. A shoe machinist by trade, lifelong socialist and mother of six, Alice Hawkins fought hard for over 100 years ago and had a bronze statue unveiled in centenary year 2018. The show features her suffrage memorabilia, and is joined by Sister Suffragette Ruth Pownall. It runs for 55 minutes, is suitable for ages 8 and over, and tickets are £9.

A first-hand family account of a working-class suffragette, brought to life through personal memorabilia and oral history passed down through the generations — this is the kind of true story that makes the Fringe feel genuinely irreplaceable.
