In The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, only Portia's appearance in court and her implacable logic saves Antonio from Shylock's knife. But what would happen if she never came to Venice? Bassanio's need for money to woo Portia sets in motion the events that lead to the trial, but what are his real motives? And why is there so much hatred between Antonio and Shylock? With echoes of Romeo and Juliet, events in A Pound of Flesh move remorselessly to a tragic end.

About the show

Performed by Arbery Theatre, a semi-professional company, A Pound of Flesh reimagines The Merchant of Venice by asking a single devastating question: what would happen if Portia never came to Venice? Without her implacable logic, Shylock's knife draws closer to Antonio. The show examines Bassanio's real motives for seeking money, the deep hatred between Antonio and Shylock, and a chain of events that moves remorselessly to a tragic end. With echoes of Romeo and Juliet, this classical drama runs for 50 minutes at Space 2 and is suitable for audiences aged 14 and over.

Why see this show?

A sharp, compact reimagining of The Merchant of Venice that strips away Portia's rescue and forces the play towards its darkest possible conclusion. For anyone who knows their Shakespeare — or wants to — this is a thought-provoking and emotionally direct production.
